Lineup at the Don Jail

Yesterday, ace Torontoist photographer Michael Chrisman and I were so lucky to be able to get a preview of the Don Jail before the poor crowds who waited for hours in the sun. We arrived at 9 a.m. and by the time I left at 11, the line-up looked like this:

For anyone who couldn't make it -- or didn't want to wait five hours to get in to The Old Don Jail -- there is a terrific new book on the last hangings in Canada called The Last to Die: Ronald Turpin, Arthur Lucas, and the End of Capital Punishment in Canada. The book goes into great detail about the Old Don Jail -- the site of the executions -- and the last days of Turpin and Lucas before they were hanged there on December 11, 1962. I got my copy at Amazon.ca
